Summary

The book contains a selection of papers from two workshops, one held at Dokkyo University titled "Phase and Merge" on November 7, 2014 and the other at the annual meeting of the English Linguistic Society of Japan titled "On the Phasehood of CP and Other Projections" on November 8, 2014. The focus of the workshops is to shed some light into the architecture of undoubtedly the most fundamental unit of any natural language, which has been given the symbol S in earlier generative research. (excerpted from "Introduction: The Initial and Recursive Symbol S" by Miyoko Yasui)
