Summary

This booklet is the seventh volume in the series Studies in the History of the English Language. It comprises contributions treating a wide range of historical periods, from Old English to the eighteenth century. The seven essays assembled here cover significant turns in the history of societies and aspects of their media of communication―interlinear glosses in foreign language manuscripts, translation and subsequent editing, compositing and printing, ambivalent spelling under the influence of other languages, writing in a foreign language and the absence of writing altogether. The cases of variation dealt with here are discussed in association with linguistic and personal or social contact at or preceding the time of text production. (excerpts from "Preface" by Mitsumi Uchida, Yoko Iyeiri and Lawrence Schourup)
